Getting to Know Simon Horta: A Rising Star

Simon Horta Class of 2028

Simon Horta’s football journey began with a surprising shift in focus. Coming from a family deeply rooted in soccer where relatives played for teams like the New York Red Bulls, The Puerto Rican World Cup squad, and the Polish national team. Soccer seemed destined to be Simon’s sport. However, after excelling in soccer but growing bored with it, Simon found himself drawn to the gridiron.

In 6th grade, his father convinced his mother to let him try football, and Simon dove into the sport with little knowledge of it. His first season was a learning curve, starting as a center due to his belief that it was a position similar to soccer’s midfield. Despite his inexperience, Simon’s natural athleticism quickly shone through. A standout 5.3-second 40-yard dash at a combine landed him in the running back position, kickstarting his love for the game.

Now a versatile athlete who plays wide receiver and safety, Simon’s game is marked by his speed, agility, and football IQ. As a WR, Simon thrives on the chess match against defensive backs, using his creativity and athleticism to create separation and make big plays. As a safety, his knack for reading the quarterback and positioning himself strategically sets him apart as a playmaker on defense.

Off the football field, Simon also excels in track and field, competing in the 100-meter dash and long jump—events that complement his explosiveness and speed on the gridiron. We asked Simon a few questions to get to know him better before the season starts.

Q: Why did you decide to join NoLackinLifestyle for 7-on-7?

I already knew some of the coaches while I was still considering Cardinal O’Hara, and I liked their approach. But what really drew me in was NoLackin’s mission—it’s not just about football. They help players grow on and off the field, and it feels like being part of a family.

Q: What are some of your personal goals for this season?

First, I want to win a 7-on-7 tournament. Personally, I’d love to lead my team in touchdowns and improve as a WR and DB. I also want to take advantage of every opportunity to develop my skills.

Q: How do you see 7-on-7 helping you improve as an athlete?

I’m driven by competition, and 7-on-7 gives me a chance to stay sharp in the offseason. It pushes me to improve my technique and test myself against talented players, whether I’m facing tough DBs or competing against other WRs.

Q: What does being a good teammate mean to you?

It means putting the team first, always giving your best, and having your teammates’ backs. It’s not just about saying the right things—it’s about doing whatever it takes to help the team succeed. Encouraging each other, staying positive, and pushing each other to improve are all part of being a good teammate.

Q: How do you prepare physically and mentally before games or practices?

I start by making sure I’m physically ready—stretching, warming up, and focusing on my drills. Mentally, I lock in by clearing distractions and visualizing plays. I also think about all the work I’ve put in leading up to that moment. That mindset keeps me sharp and focused.

Q: How do you balance school, football, and other commitments?

It’s all about time management. I try to use any free time during school to get my work done and set priorities for what’s most important. If I ever feel overwhelmed, I lean on my parents for advice and support.

Q: What are you most excited about as you start another season with NoLackinLifestyle?

This is my second season with NoLackin. In my first season, I had some big moments—winning Top Performer in my first tournament and moving up to the 15U team. This year, I’m excited to build on that success, continue learning from the great coaching staff, and compete at a high level.

Q: What’s one area of your game you’re focused on improving?

I’m working on being more physical as a WR, especially against DBs who press at the line. I don’t want to rely only on my speed. On defense, I’m focused on improving my technique and becoming a smarter, more disciplined player.

Q: Who is your favorite football player, and why?

Jalen Hurts. I’m more introverted on the field, and I really admire his quiet leadership style. He leads by example, and that’s something I’m trying to do more of as I grow as a leader for my teammates.

Q: Do you have any pre-game rituals or favorite hype songs?

I usually listen to the “Beastmode” playlist on Spotify—it gets me locked in. Before games, I also like catching 75–100 balls to get my hands ready and build chemistry with my quarterback.

Q: If you could describe your playing style in one word, what would it be?

Dynamic. I think it captures my speed, agility, versatility, and my ability to make big plays on offense and defense. It also speaks to my competitive edge and how I thrive in key moments.

Q: What’s next for you?

I’m focused on making this season with NoLackinLifestyle my best yet—winning tournaments, leading my team, and becoming a better player every day. Long-term, I want to keep growing as an athlete and a person, on and off the field.
